Why does someone else’s hardship make our own feel less important? Stories on the news get our attention, but the person next door can be ignored and forgotten. Listening doesn’t mean taking sides or agreeing with every detail. Sometimes it simply means making room for someone to share their experience and feel heard, without being judged or asked to prove how they feel. Maybe if we each take the time to look around at our own families and communities, we’ll listen more and assume less. A snapshot can’t tell us how someone is really feeling. The Lesson I’m Finally Learning For a long time, I thought being loving meant putting everyone else first. I learned to notice what people needed, make room for them, and keep going, often without asking what I needed. This year, a life lesson finally came into focus: I matter too. Not more than anyone else. Not less. Just as much. So many women are taught to carry the emotional weight of a home and call it love. I’m learning that caring for others and making room for myself can exist together.
